If given the choice, would you have chosen spending your day in the dental chair or doing your income taxes over going to work today? If you answered yes, you are not alone. So many people dread going to work because of anticipating the problems they will face. These negative emotions rob you of your energy and ability to effectively use your talents and skills for a productive day.
Everyone deals with a variety of problems that are beyond your control. These chronic irritations reduce productivity and morale. Sadly, much of this stress is inherent to that job and can only partially be reduced by management. However, the great news is that the majority of the daily work stress can be significantly reduced allowing you to be the productive and valued team member you would like to be.
Rather than focus on the things you have little or no control over, I encourage you to optimize and maximize your ability to make your day run smoothly at every opportunity. POWER is an acronym for Plan, Organize, Wisdom, Energy and Resilience.
PLAN your day! Whether it is unique for that day or a routine for you type of work, a planned day runs smoother and is more productive. When micro emergencies arise that cause you to deviate, a good plan can restore order and focus to the chaos that ensued from the disruption. A plan can quiet the emotions that arose during the problem such as anxiety of dealing with the unexpected or frustration of finding a solution.
ORGANIZATION is the grease on the work wheel for success. Having what you need, where you need it, when you need it saves time and steps. It is very empowering to know that you have what you need and can move on to performing a task without interrupting to go find something that is out of place or discovering that your supply is exhausted.
WISDOM dispels any self doubt. It is no more than the savvy of knowing what your job is, its duties and expectations and having the training and/or experience to make you confident in your ability to do a good job. It is human nature to want to excel at what you do but that required obtaining your skill set plus being on the same page with work needs and requirements. The positive emotion is self confidence.
ENERGY or EXPERTISE - your choice on this one. Both can greatly increase your productivity but more importantly both will dramatically increase your positive emotions. Your energy is your motivation to tackle your work day and get things done. Your expertise is the self confidence in your ability to not only accomplish what your day requires but that you excel at it. You are on top of your game and you know it.
RESILIENCE in the sense of the work day applies to the ability to stay on task to reach your goals. You may encounter road blocks, chaos and other people's emergencies but you are able to take care of those and not allow them to overwhelm you emotionally. You can remain calm, work efficiently and get back on track to finish you goals of the day.
The bottom line is that you control your day much more than you thought. If you allow yourself to focus on negatives, you enter work looking for those negatives and I assure you that you will find them. Then upon confirming that things are bad just as you thought, you will continue to focus on finding more distractions, demands on your time and a sense of unfairness. If instead you choose to approach you work day with confidence, you can repel all those negative emotions and set the tone for success. Focus on you POWER and own your day.
