The person we think of as our self is a combination of our genetics and experiences in life. Through our life experiences we learn more about our likes and dislikes, what we value as well as what is unacceptable. It is also through our experiences that we learn what to expect and how our relationships, family, community and world works.
When events in our life don't fit our reality or expectation, the discord can trigger emotional responses that have a negative impact on us. Consequently, our reaction may reduce our ability to function to our normal levels and have a negative effect on relationships, work and daily function.
